We thought we had this simple beauty routine down. Spoiler alert! We didn't.

Top facialist Jocelyn Petroni gave us her cleansing musts.

* The most important thing with cleansing is regularity – which means twice a day, every day.

* Cleansing before bed is the number one priority, because you’re removing all dirt, bacteria, germs and excess oil. If you don’t cleanse it off, it will absorb into your skin and you’re more likely to end up with breakouts.

* Use lukewarm water. Cold water will constrict pores, hot will cause redness and sensitivity, but lukewarm helps to open pores up so your cleanser works deeper in your skin.

BEAUTY HOW-TO: WHAT YOUR SPOTS REALLY MEAN

* Use clean hands. Your hands carry heaps of dirt and bacteria that you totally don’t want on your face.

* Wet skin acts like a sponge, so wet your skin before applying your cleanser to get a better result.

* Massage cleanser in using circular motions, and don’t be afraid to use pressure! A good, strong massage gets your circulation flowing, which can help prevent breakouts.

* Always double cleanse. The first wash removes dirt and makeup, and the second gets right into your pores and removes dead skin cells.
